About the Project: Climate on the Ledger

The project “Climate on the Ledger: Global Environmental Tariffs Explained” examines the increasing use of environmental tariffs—trade measures linked to climate change, pollution control, waste management, and sustainability standards.

As countries adopt tools such as carbon border taxes and plastic or waste-related tariffs, these policies are reshaping:

• Global trade flows
• Climate diplomacy
• Economic interests of developing and emerging economies, including India

Key Objectives of the Project

The project aims to:

• Map major environmental tariffs adopted globally
• Develop a four-category global typology to classify such tariffs
• Apply this framework to key sectors:
  • Plastics
  • Steel
  • Textiles
  • Coal
• Generate policy-relevant insights for India and other Global South economies

What Research Interns Will Do

Selected interns will contribute to the project through:

• Desk-based policy and literature review
• Compilation and organisation of trade and environmental data
• Sector-specific research and analysis
• Assisting in drafting research reports and policy briefs

📌 This is a research- and writing-focused internship conducted entirely online.

Expected Research Outputs
