About the Fair Trial Programme – NALSAR
The Fair Trial Programme is an initiative aimed at ensuring effective legal representation for undertrial prisoners. Through The Square Circle Clinic, NALSAR works on criminal justice reforms, focusing on pro bono defence, legal aid, research, and policy advocacy.
Position: Legal Fellow (Consultant) – Nagpur Office
- Total Vacancies: 2 Positions
- Type: Full-Time, In-Person
- Location: Nagpur, Maharashtra
- Contract Duration: 1 Year (Extendable based on performance and funding)
Key Responsibilities
Selected Legal Fellows will work closely with District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) and Legal Aid Defence Counsels (LADC) to assist undertrial prisoners. The role includes:
- Visiting prisons for client meetings and legal counselling
- Assisting legal aid lawyers in court hearings, drafting, and research
- Coordinating with DLSA and prison authorities
- Reviewing case files and preparing legal strategies
- Communicating with clients and their families
- Preparing for cross-examinations and evidence hearings
- Organizing training and documentation activities
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a registered advocate (Sanad holder) with any State Bar Council
- Minimum 2 years of experience in criminal trial practice
- Fluency in Marathi (reading, writing, speaking) – Mandatory
- Proficiency in English and basic computer skills (MS Office, Email, Internet)
Prior experience with DLSA or legal aid work will be an added advantage.
Fellowship Amount
Monthly Stipend: ₹50,000 – ₹60,000 (Based on experience)
