I had the enriching opportunity to gain internship Experience with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA), a statutory body committed to ensuring access to justice for all, particularly the marginalized sections of society. This internship was a holistic blend of fieldwork, legal exposure, institutional learning, and social outreach, making it an eye-opening experience for any aspiring legal professional.

Nature of Work & Key Responsibilities: DSLSA Internship Experience

🔹 Legal Awareness & Community Outreach:

• Assisted in legal awareness programs at schools and police stations.
• Participated in door-to-door campaigns promoting access to legal aid.
• Contributed to spreading awareness about Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

🔹 Practical Legal Exposure:

• Supported legal professionals in court proceedings involving domestic violence, labour law disputes, and tenancy matters.
• Gained exposure to social justice laws and their application on the ground.

Institutional Visits: Delhi State Legal Services Authority Internship Experience

During the internship, I had the opportunity to visit key legal institutions to understand their operations and societal impact:

1. District & Family (Courts Tis Hajari): Observed live hearings and understood case flow management and trial procedures.
2. Mediation & Conciliation Centre: I understood how disputes are amicably resolved without litigation.
3. Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS): Witnessed cases involving mental health and how the justice system incorporates psychiatric evaluations.
4. Delhi Commission for Women (DCW): Learned about the complaint’s redressal mechanisms for women victims.
5. Child Welfare Committee (CWC): Gained insights into child custody, protection from abuse, and the role of Juvenile Justice Boards.
6. 2 Days: Campinas for Access for Justice for All @ Lok Adalat or NALSA Scheme
7. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR): Interacted with officials dealing with POCSO cases and child welfare schemes.
8. Mandoli Central Jail

These visits were instrumental in exposing me to the interdisciplinary interface between law, psychology, social work, and governance.

1. Legal Aid and Assistance

• Participated in court observations, including family disputes, bail hearings, and domestic violence cases under the guidance of panel advocates.
• Assisted in the drafting of basic legal documents and petitions related to family disputes, labour rights, and rent-related conflicts.
• Learned how the legal aid system works to support underprivileged sections through free legal advice, counseling, and court representation.

2. Community Legal Awareness Initiatives

• Took part in organizing and conducting legal awareness programs in:
  • Government schools (sensitization on POCSO, child rights, right to education)
  • Police stations (legal rights of arrested persons, custodial rights)
• Interacted directly with beneficiaries, gaining an understanding of how legal illiteracy impedes access to justice.

3. Campaigning and Public Interaction

• Engaged in door-to-door campaigns across selected communities and slums in Delhi to raise awareness about:
  • Free legal aid
  • Rights of women, children, and senior citizens
  • Helplines and legal clinics operated by DSLSA
• Distributed printed legal aid pamphlets and conducted informal street-law talks with locals under the guidance of Legal Services Counselors.

Reflections and Suggestions

• The internship helped me develop legal research, observation, and communication skills.
• Enhanced my empathy and understanding of the real-world problems faced by marginalized citizens.
• Interactions with judges, legal aid lawyers, and public officials taught me the importance of grassroots legal empowerment.
• I suggest more structured team discussions or reflections after institutional visits to consolidate learning.

This internship has been a transformative journey, both professionally and personally. It taught me that law is not just about litigation but also about service, sensitivity, and accessibility. I am immensely thankful to DSLSA and its committed team for making this internship so comprehensive and impactful.
