About the NLS Programme in Indian Languages and Literatures
In 2025, NLSIU launched the BA (Hons) programme to prepare students to critically engage with contemporary issues in India through a multidisciplinary approach. A central component of this curriculum is the study of Indian languages, designed to enhance cultural understanding, promote inclusivity, and encourage non-English modes of critical thinking.
The Programme in Indian Languages and Literatures aims to:
- Introduce students to basic, intermediate, and advanced language courses.
- Develop certificate courses offered in online/hybrid formats.
- Build linguistic and cultural competence essential for professional success in a multilingual society.
At NLSIU, language learning transcends literacy—it becomes a pedagogical tool for functional communication, cultural participation, and professional expression.
Eligibility Criteria
Essential Qualifications
- MA or MPhil in the relevant language and its literature (Hindi or Kannada).
- Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in senior high school, undergraduate programs, or recognized civil society institutions engaged in language education.
Desirable Qualification
- PhD in a relevant discipline (preferred but not mandatory).
Preferred Qualities
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Innovative and student-centered teaching methodologies.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students.
- Interest in developing inclusive and dynamic pedagogical approaches.
- Commitment to the evolving study of language and literature.

Outline a 60-hour introductory course for first-year undergraduates (around 30 students) covering script, phonetics, cultural context, and auditory/visual environments. Include:- Teaching resources and reading list (with brief rationale).
- One detailed lesson plan and in-class worksheet.
- Methods to engage students with varied learning abilities.
