The M.K. Nambyar Memorial Essay Competition 2026 invites by NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad for law students to participate in a prestigious legal writing competition focusing on important constitutional and social justice issues.

The competition aims to encourage critical legal analysis, constitutional research, and comparative legal studies among students pursuing legal education in India.

Essay Topics

About the Institution

NALSAR University of Law is one of India’s leading law universities known for excellence in legal education, constitutional studies, and research. The university regularly hosts national and international academic events, competitions, and legal research initiatives for law students across the country.

The M.K. Nambyar SAARC Law Centre for Advanced Legal Studies was established at NALSAR in 2003 under the patronage of K. K. Venugopal. The Centre focuses on research and academic discussions related to Indian constitutional law, comparative constitutional law, and legal issues affecting South Asian countries.

The Centre was recently revived with Justice S. Ravindra Bhat serving as the Chair of Comparative Constitutional Law Studies.

Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to:

  • Students of Year III and above in 5-year LL.B programmes
  • Students of Year II and above in 3-year LL.B programmes

Prizes and Benefits

Selected winners will receive the following cash prizes:

  • First Prize: ₹50,000
  • Second Prize: ₹35,000
  • Third Prize: ₹20,000

Additional benefits include:

  • Internship opportunities at chambers of Senior Counsel at the Supreme Court of India
  • Academic recognition from a reputed constitutional law centre

Important Submission Guidelines

Participants must follow these rules carefully:

  • Only individual submissions are allowed
  • Essays must be original and plagiarism-free
  • Use of generative AI tools is prohibited
  • Comparative legal analysis is permitted, especially regarding South Asian legal systems
  • Proper footnote citations are mandatory

  • Maximum word limit: 3,000 words
  • Footnotes are excluded from the word count
  • Speaking footnotes are discouraged

Internship Details for Winners

Winning participants will receive internship placements at chambers of Senior Counsel practicing before the Supreme Court of India. Students will have flexibility in selecting a four-week internship period during their semester break, subject to chamber availability.
