Call for Applications | Research Associate at NLSIU
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has invited applications for the position of Research Associate under the prestigious Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS) Project. This is a full-time research position extending up to March 2027, offering a unique opportunity to work on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of climate justice, urban studies, and informal labour.
About the JusTIS Project NLSIU
Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS) is an international collaborative research project funded by The British Academy’s Knowledge Frontiers: International Interdisciplinary Research Projects Award (2025–27), in partnership with the University of Oxford.
Key Focus Areas of the Project
- Climate change and urban transitions in Indian cities
- Lived realities of street-based workers, including:
- Street vendors
- Platform workers
- Informal transport operators
- Inclusion, dignity, and recognition in climate and urban policymaking
The project challenges top-down climate approaches by centring the voices, knowledge, and experiences of informal workers who sustain urban life but remain systematically invisible in policy frameworks.

The JusTIS project adopts a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, focusing on:
- Bengaluru
- Delhi
- Kolkata
The research examines how social injustice, climate vulnerability, and urban governance intersect on Indian streets.
Research Associate: Role & Responsibilities
The selected Research Associate will work under the supervision of Dr. Anwesha Ghosh (Co-Investigator, NLSIU) and will be responsible for:
- Conducting qualitative fieldwork in Bengaluru
- Visiting and working with archives
- Preparing detailed field notes and qualitative data records
- Organising and supporting an academic workshop
- Carrying out comprehensive literature reviews
- Participating in project meetings and reading groups
- Maintaining monthly progress and budget reports
- Assisting with additional research-related tasks as required
Eligibility & Qualifications
Essential Qualification
- Master’s degree in:
- Social Sciences
- Law
- Public Policy
- Or allied disciplines
Desirable Qualification
- Academic background in:
- Urban studies
- Environmental history
- Mobilities research
- Early-career researchers awaiting PhD defence may apply
Required Experience
Essential Experience
- Minimum 2 years of post-qualification qualitative research experience in Bengaluru
- Demonstrable academic interest in:
- Informal workers
- Livelihoods
- Justice and equity
- Experience in organising academic conferences or workshops
Desirable Experience
- Familiarity with debates on:
- Just transitions
- Decolonisation
- Environmental justice
- Experience in contributing to research publications
- Prior work within a research team
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Strong research execution and operational rigour
- Effective presentation and time management skills

Compensation Details
