The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has announced a full-time Postdoctoral [PG] Researcher vacancy 2026 for its prestigious research initiative titled “Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS)”. This position is available until March 2027 and offers a unique opportunity to work on an internationally funded, interdisciplinary climate and urban justice project.

About NLSIU Postdoctoral Research Opportunity

This postdoctoral position is part of a major research collaboration supported by The British Academy’s Knowledge Frontiers Award (2025–27), in partnership with the University of Oxford. The selected researcher will work closely with Dr. Anwesha Ghosh, Co-Investigator of the project and faculty member at NLSIU.

About the JusTIS Project (Just Transitions on Indian Streets)

Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS) is an interdisciplinary research project that examines how Indian cities can respond to climate change in a manner that is equitable, inclusive, and just, particularly for street-based and informal workers.

Key Focus Areas of the Project

  • Climate change and its impact on street vendors, platform workers, and informal transport workers
  • Urban streets as spaces of livelihood, mobility, and climate vulnerability
  • Recognition, dignity, and social justice in urban climate policies
  • Challenging top-down climate solutions through worker-centred knowledge

Research Methodology

The project adopts a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, using:

  • Archival research

Postdoctoral Researcher: Roles and Responsibilities

The selected Postdoctoral Researcher will be expected to:

  • Conduct archival research in designated research cities
  • Analyse and integrate qualitative data from:
    • Archives
    • Surveys
    • Interviews
    • Workshops
  • Undertake detailed literature reviews on relevant themes
  • Participate in:
    • Project meetings
    • Academic reading groups
  • Co-author research publications with project investigators
  • Support additional project-related academic and administrative tasks

Eligibility Criteria: Postdoctoral Researcher at NLSIU

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD in History or allied disciplines (completed by application deadline)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Background in:
    • Urban studies
    • Environmental history
    • Mobilities research or related fields
  • Publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed journals

Required Experience

Essential Experience

  • Formal training in archival research
  • Proven experience working with Indian archives
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Informal labour
    • Social justice in urban contexts
  • Ability to independently manage research and administrative work

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in interdisciplinary research teams
